The Kunisaki Peninsula was once a thriving region for mountain ascetic or Shugendo, which has left thousands of stone Buddha statues and numerous temples scattered along the peninsula. Unlike the major tourist areas, Kunisaki has been left untouched for centuries. It doesn’t take long for one to feel the mysticism of their surroundings and virtually slip back in time to over 1,300 years ago when mountain worship reigned in this area.
